The French national Ministry of Education has legal authority over all aspects of curriculum and assessments. It mandates the number of hours students must spend in each subject at each grade level. Some functions are delegated to 28 academies, which are regional administrative districts. They are responsible for developing and grading brevet exams for example. Individual teachers are free to choose their own instructional techniques. Our lycée is a French state school. It's called a cité scolaire since we welcome students aged from 11 /12 to 22. Our school contains a collège, a lycée and BTS classes.
The great majority of students move on to the lycée where they'll spend the next three years. Our lycée is much bigger than our collège. There are 12 classes in seconde, with about 35 students per class.
While in seconde, students will study national academic subjects: French, history, geography, mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, sports and two or three foreign languages: English or German as a first foreign language, German, English, or Spanish as a second foreign language, and Spanish or Russian as a third foreign language. In addition, they'll take elective courses in academic or technological subjects according to the baccalauréat they will take (Latin, ancient Greek, economy, history of arts, or measures in physics and computer science, P.E.).
