Cathedral by Raymond Carver
Raymond Carver (1938-1988) was an American short-story writer and poet. He is famous for his very particular style, that he described as "inclined toward brevity and intensity". As a result, his stories are minimalist: short (each is supposed to be read in one sitting, without interruption), full of suspense and emotion, and with a very simple style.
He wrote different books of short stories, but Cathedral (1983) is supposed to be his best.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time is a 2003 novel by British writer Mark Haddon.
The story is narrated by Christopher, a 15-year-old autistic boy. He discovers the dead body of Wellington, his neighbour's dog, killed by a garden fork. He then decides to investigate the dog's death. However, he is severely limited by his fears and difficulties. Throughout his adventures, Christopher records his experiences in a book: a "murder mystery novel".
It's really funny, not too long (240 pages) and very easy to read.
